Message From Our Principal
Dr. Hernandez, Principal
Dear Coleman Families,
I hope you and your loved ones are enjoying a safe and restful summer!
Last summer, we felt confident that we were on the right path to recover the “Coleman Experience” after the pandemic. The "Coleman Experience" aims to extend our students' learning beyond the classroom walls, while maintaining a supportive school community.
We continue to focus on teaching the power Academic Knowledge and Skills through the lens of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM ) in quarterly units of Project Based Learning (PBL). We are proud to be the first and oldest STEAM middle school in Gwinnett County and the state of Georgia! Our students use the Engineering Design Process and Arts Integration to answer driving questions and solve real-world problems, while learning the Future Skills of Collaboration, Communication, Critical Thinking, and Creativity that are so important in today's jobs. We expose our students to speakers, businesses, and organizations, and include parent volunteers, and community partners in our learning, by opening our school to the community during our Project Based Learning showcases and extracurricular activities. An essential part of the "Coleman Experience" is achieving these learning goals while also creating a school community where each student, parent, teacher, and staff member, feels respected, valued, and supported.
Last year, using the new Gwinnett County Public Schools’ Blueprint for the Future that identifies the 4 strategic priorities of Empathy, Equity, Effectiveness, and Excellence, and with your feedback, we created our Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports (PBIS) program and launched our academic intervention and enrichment Challenge All To Succeed (CATS) time. I am proud to report that with the commitment and dedication of our wonderful teachers, staff, students, families, and our community partners, we have strengthened the “Coleman Experience” by creating more opportunities to help every student reach their individual potential and develop a sense of belonging.
As we prepare to open the 2023-2024 school year, we continue to be excited about the work that lies ahead! We are committed to build on the 2 pillars that makes Coleman Middle School a unique place: Our STEAM/PBL learning program and our supportive school community. We will be focusing on the latest on the best teaching strategies, PBL, integration of Language Arts and Social Studies into Humanities, strengthening our academic academic interventions and enrichment time, and launching our Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports.
As it is tradition at Coleman Middle School, I am proud to reveal our 2023-2024 school theme below:
We Belong, The Coleman Experience. This theme will keep us focused and inspired!
Your Proud Principal,
Dr. Hernandez
