Parenting Tip(s) of the Week
Use Words That Motivate, Not Discourage
Your child has been working to master a new skill in class, but their schoolwork shows that they still don’t understand it. The language you use to talk with them about it can motivate them … or cause them to give up.
Saying things like "You haven’t quite mastered this yet," sends a signal to your child that they can get the answer if they just keep working. Studies show that children will keep working if they believe they can figure out the answer … even if they’re "not there yet." On the other hand if your child hears you say, "You still don't understand," they may think they never will.
Attendance Awareness Month
Every September , Attendance Awareness Month takes place to spread awareness regarding why maintaining attendance in school and college is essential for academic success. Apart from the fact that missing classes can place a student behind in their coursework, absenteeism also affects assignments and final exams.
When people think of school attendance, they immediately think of truant students, students who skip school, or have unexcused absences. Instead, there is a need to focus on total absences as a whole, both excused and unexcused, as the impact of missing school can be universally observed in all grade levels in a student’ s academic achievement and overall adjustment to school. Below are resources available to support students based on contributing factors for chronic absences.

School Visitors & Volunteers
Out of an abundance of caution and due to the recent surge in COVID-19 cases, we will continue the visitor protocol that was in place for the 2020-2021 school year until we receive further guidance. Lunchroom visitors and school volunteers will not be permitted in the school building until further notice. It is our sincere hope that conditions will improve, and we will be able to reopen our doors and benefit from the value that our committed volunteers add to our school. We appreciate and cherish each of our volunteers, family visitors and community partners. In the interim, we invite you to help us identify opportunities for volunteers to support our school community virtually. Please reach out to Ms. Jarrell with your suggestions at Fueneequa.Jarrell@gcpsk12.org.
At Centerville Elementary School, we enjoy honoring students on their birthday. However, we would like to continue to practice safety during these times; we are requiring that all birthday treats be individually and commercially wrapped and nut free. Foods made at home may not be distributed within the school. If your child wants to bring a birthday treat, encourage them to bring in a healthy snack or even better; bring an item for the classroom such as a classroom book (signed and dated by your child) or other classroom supplies such as pencils, erasers, etc. Individually packaged items that would be considered healthy snacks include: pretzels, baked crackers, and granola bars. At this time, we are asking that you do not send cupcakes for your child's birthday treats. These items are not individually wrapped and do not meet our safety guidelines during the pandemic.
