Dress Code

Dress Code for Healthcare Science Programs is based on the industry standard of dress. Appropriate dress is expected at all times in the classroom and in the lab. ALL students are required to wear properly fitting scrubs every day. Scrubs may be purchased from Walmart or any other provider the student chooses. 

Note:
Students who participate in the EMR program will be required to purchase program specific scrubs/uniform at a later date.

• Nails
Students may not have gel polish, acrylic or gel products, or any other type of artificial nails. Nails can be no longer than the tip of the fingers as they may scratch or injure a "patient" (manikin), and they prevent students from effectively mastering the skills taught in the Healthcare program.

• Hair must be pulled back off the face during lab/skill performance.

Introduction to Healthcare Science

Course Description: Introduction to Healthcare Science is the foundational course for all Health Science pathways and is a prerequisite for all other Healthcare Science pathway courses. This course will enable students to receive initial exposure to the many Healthcare Science careers as well as employability, communication, and technology skills necessary in the healthcare industry. The concepts of human growth and development, interaction with patients and family members, health, wellness, and preventative care are evaluated, as well as the legal, ethical responsibilities of today’s healthcare provider. Fundamental healthcare skills development is initiated including microbiology, basic life support and first aid. This course will provide students with a competitive edge to be the better candidate for either entry into the healthcare global marketplace and/or the post-secondary institution of their choice to continue their education and training. The pre-requisite for this course is advisor approval.

Essentials of Healthcare

Course Description: Anatomy and Physiology is a vital part of most healthcare post-secondary education programs. The Essentials of Healthcare is a medical-focused anatomy course addressing the physiology of each body system, along with the investigation of common diseases, disorders and emerging diseases. The prevention of disease and the diagnosis and treatment that might be utilized are addressed, along with medical terminology related to each system. This course provides an opportunity to demonstrate technical skills that enforce the goal of helping students make connections between medical procedures and the pathophysiology of diseases and disorders. The pre-requisite for this course is Introduction to Healthcare.

Allied Health and Medicine

Course Description: This course is designed to offer students (preferably upper classmen - juniors or seniors) the opportunity to become effective and efficient multi-skilled healthcare providers as they develop a working knowledge of various allied health opportunities. Students focusing on a career path in the healthcare field may apply classroom/lab knowledge and skills in the clinical setting as they participate in direct or simulated client care. The curriculum allows instructors to provide options for classroom/student growth opportunities in area(s) of interest to the student. These options may be determined by community need, available resources, and/or student interest, etc. This course was developed according to a basic 50-minute class time frame, but may be adjusted according to local system schedules. Instructors may select which classroom content standards 1-14 best meet his/her individual classroom needs in addition to the required clinical/capstone project to equal total class time available for the course.

Emergency Medical Responder

Course Description: The Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) course prepares the student to provide initial stabilizing care to the sick or injured prior to the arrival of Emergency Medical Services Professionals (EMS), and to assist EMS personnel in transporting patients for definitive care at an appropriate hospital/facility. Major areas of instruction include Introductory Medical Terminology and Anatomy & Physiology; Responder Safety; Incident Command; Blood-borne Pathogen Training; Basic Physical Assessment; and Treatment of Trauma and Medical Emergencies; Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and the use of Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs). The course is a blend of lecture, hands on lab/learning, and practical scenario-based learning/testing.

Mr. Joshua Danner

Emergency Medical Responder Course Instructor

Mr. Joshua Danner instructs the EMR course here at MHST. In 2003, he became a nationally and state registered paramedic. He has worked in several emergency medicine settings such as 911 transport service for Cobb and Dekalb counties, non-emergency transport services, emergency room paramedic at Gwinnett Medical Center and Northeast Georgia Medical Braselton, and critical care transport.  He continues to work as a PRN paramedic for AMR in Dekalb County. Mr. Danner is currently obtaining his bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University Idaho.  
 
Mr. Danner enjoys hanging out with his toddler son, hiking, camping, golf, and watching the Atlanta Braves. His favorite color is blue and his favorite foods are fruits and hibachi.

Mrs. Theresa Entrekin, M.Ed., ARRT(R)(MR)

Allied Health Course Instructor

Theresa Entrekin, M.Ed., ARRT(R)(MR) is registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) as Radiologic Technologist and Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologist. She holds a B.S. in Health Sciences from the Medical University of South Carolina but began her career in a technical college setting.  

She has a wide variety of clinical experience in both hospital and outpatient clinics.  She has been teaching in Medical Imaging Sciences at the technical college level in both traditional classroom and online courses for 30 years. She is passionate about healthcare sciences and is committed to preparing the next generations of healthcare providers at Maxwell High School of Technology in the Healthcare Science Allied Pathway.  

She is married, has 2 children and two big furry dogs that occupy her time outside of the classroom. Her hobbies include camping and her favorite places to camp are in the mountains and anywhere near water.

​She is a member of the Society for Magnetic Resonance Technologist (SMRT) and the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT), SkillsUSA.

Mr. Mike Wojtkowski

Allied Health Course Instructor

Originally from Pittsburgh, PA, I began my post-secondary education at Robert Morris College for Business Administration.  In a short time, it became clear this wasn't the right direction for me.  Following the advice of a friend, I changed course and enrolled at Community College of Allegheny County to pursue an Allied Health career in Radiologic Technology.  Once registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, my career began at South Fulton Medical Center in East Point, GA in 1993.  Since then, I've worked in the field continuously. This 25-year career has included the unique opportunity to work on cases which were under the direction of a well-known forensic pathologist and the opportunity to take a travel assignment in San Francisco.

A few years into my life as a radiologic technologist, I decided to return to Georgia State University for Early Childhood Education.  With this degree, I began teaching third grade at Minor Elementary, here in Gwinnett County.  Over the 19 years at Minor, I've added a Masters of Education in School Counseling; an Educational Specialist in Curriculum and Instruction; a certification in Health and Physical Education; and a certification in Healthcare Sciences to my teaching certificate.  The certificate in Healthcare Sciences is what brings me to Maxwell High School to teach the Allied Health Pathway.

Mrs. Barbara Hoag, MT (ASCP)

Work Based Learning Instructor

Barbara comes to Maxwell with over 20 years of experience in the clinical laboratory. She has worked in all areas of the general laboratory (Chemistry, Blood Bank, Urinalysis, Hematology, phlebotomy) with a concentration in Chemistry. She most recently worked at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta in the Microbiology Department and Urgent Care Centers.

Barbara received her Bachelors of Science in Medical Technology from the University of Wyoming. She is married and has three children. Her oldest is a recent graduate of Georgia Tech, her middle child is a graduate of UNG and her youngest is a BSN/RN at Gwinnett Medical in the Emergency Department.

Mrs. Sue Compton

Healthcare Science Instructional Support

Ms. Compton comes to Maxwell to aide the healthcare teachers as an advisor for HOSA.  She is currently the owner of The House of Clay in Braselton where she enjoys creating ceramics and teaching others her craft.  She is currently working on a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Ceramics at the University of North Georgia.

Ms. Compton enjoys gardening, spending time with her daughters, son, and husband.
