• Gwinnett County Public Schools is focused on communicating as clearly and thoroughly as possible during these times. We continue to do our best to share decisions as they are made and provide additional information as it becomes available.
    • GCPS uses SchoolMessenger as a primary communication tool with families and staff members. These messages are sent by phone, email, and text. Therefore, it is important that your contact information be up to date. If you are interested in receiving text messages, you must opt in.
    • Please ensure that your contact information is up to date for your child(ren). Visit the Parent Portal to update email, phone numbers, and mailing addresses. You can conveniently do so for each child in the family in one location.
    • We will communicate throughout the school year to inform you of any changes or updates. Along with SchoolMessenger messages, we also will share information on our website, and on social media, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
    • Signs will be posted throughout all school buildings reminding students and staff of recommended health and safety practices. Students will be reminded of our mask requirement, proper handwashing, and techniques for covering coughs and sneezes.
    • Once students return to school buildings, there will be situations where a student or staff member tests positive for COVID-19. Each case will be evaluated individually. As needed, schools will communicate directly with the families of students who are considered contacts of someone with COVID-19. For the purposes of contact investigations, the CDC considers a close contact to be someone who has been within 6 feet of an infected person for 15 minutes, with or without masks. Due to federal health and privacy laws, GCPS will not identify individuals with COVID-19, and asks that others not speculate about possible cases.

    What is the process when a student tests positive or is diagnosed with COVID-19? What information will families receive?

    #1: Student Tests Positive or is Diagnosed with COVID-19— Parent/guardian is responsible for notifying their child’s school immediately.

    #2: District and Health Department Notification— The school’s trained Health Response Team enters information about the positive case into the district’s secure tracking tool. This information is reported to the Gwinnett County Health Department as required.

    #3: Notify Parents/Guardians and Staff— If the student who tested positive had been at school, the school’s Health Response Team identifies and contacts anyone who has been in close contact. The CDC considers a close contact to be anyone who has been within 6 feet of the infected person for 15 minutes. In addition, affected families and staff members will be provided with information/recommendations from the health department, including when students and staff members may return to school and work.

    #4: Continue Student Learning— Students and staff members in quarantine are temporarily transitioned to the digital learning platform. Unless a child is ill, school attendance and participation is expected.

    #5: Share Additional Notifications—Each day, the number of positive cases, by school, are posted on the district website.


    What can my family do to help prevent the spread of COVID-19?

    Continue Daily Preventive Habits— Check temperature before leaving for school/bus stop, wear a mask properly (nose/mouth covered), wash hands frequently, cover coughs and sneezes, and social distance when possible. Most importantly, keep your child home if he or she is experiencing respiratory symptoms, a fever of 100.4 or higher, or other symptoms, or if the student has been exposed to someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19.
