History

  • Peter A. Puckett      Puckett’s Mill Elementary opened its doors on August 11, 2008, to more than 1,100 students. The school is named for a prominent, local mill owned by the Puckett family. Mr. Puckett’s Mill ground corn and wheat. Our students selected the Sparrow Hawks for the school mascot with a cluster theme of cardinal red, navy blue, Vegas gold as out school colors.

The school is named for a mill that was operated in Gwinnett County by Peter A. Puckett during the late 1800s. Mr. Puckett owned land on Puckett Mill Road where he operated a water mill used by residents of the Hog Mountain community for grinding corn and wheat. It is not known what became of Mr. Puckett’s mill, but he is remembered as also being a furniture maker and an avid inventor who always looked for ways to make life easier. A Civil War soldier, Mr. Puckett (1834–1913) is buried in the Hog Mountain Cemetery located at Georgia 124 and Hog Mountain Church Road.

Since its opening, Puckett’s Mill Elementary has worked to achieve its vision of a community of world-class learners who leave a legacy of leadership and service in our community and beyond. Evidence of these “world-class” students is found in the accomplishments of the school’s 13 clubs and in the many enrichment opportunities afforded students. The school has an active National Junior Beta Club and the Puckett’s Mill Robotics Team has earned top honors at the FIRST LEGO League state competition and represented the school and district at the world competition in 2017. Students also garner awards for their artistic, literary, and academic talents, including awards in the Georgia PTA Reflections contest, Science and Engineering Fair, and Young Georgia Author Writing Competition. And, Puckett’s Mill continues to cultivate student leaders through its Peer Leader and Growing Leaders programs.

The school itself has earned recognition as a leader in academic achievement, continually placing among the top-performing schools, earning honors for environmental education from Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful, and receiving a state Innovation Grant to support its STEM and Project-Based Learning efforts. The school offers STEM experiences through the integration of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

And this world-class school is supported by a world-class community as evidenced by its involved parents, support for students and community initiatives like Relay for Life and the local food bank.
