Gateway Writing Assessment in U.S. History

Domains 2022-2023

Introduction

The purpose of this document is to provide guidance to teachers in planning instruction to prepare students for the Gateway Writing Assessment in U.S. History for the 2022-2023 school year.

U.S. History Gateway prompts are developed to allow students to demonstrate mastery of the U.S. History AKS as they relate to foundational concepts in American history and civics, including the evolution of American liberty over time. Prompts also require document analysis, including both primary and secondary sources and analysis of important founding documents throughout American history.

How to Use This Document

This document should be used to ensure that as the social studies Academic Knowledge & Skills (AKS) are taught, the literacy skills needed for Gateway writing, such as document analysis and content area writing, are embedded with the key content outlined in this document.
