Gateway Writing Assessment in Science 

Introduction 

The purpose of this document is to provide guidance to teachers in planning instruction to prepare students for the High School Gateway Writing Assessment in Science for the 2022-2023 school year.  

Science Gateway prompts are developed to allow students to demonstrate mastery of the chemistry AKS through the science & engineering practices as they relate to scientific phenomena and document analysis.  

How to Use This Document

This document should be used to ensure that as the Science Academic Knowledge & Skills (AKS) are taught, the literacy skills needed for Gateway writing, such as document analysis and content area writing, are embedded with key content outlined in this document. For science, this document provides overarching guidance on content related to Chemistry. 

This table shares the combination of an overarching chemistry AKS domain guided by the foundational concepts related to the scientific domain.
