The Gwinnett County Public Schools’ (GCPS) Community-Based Mentoring Program is transitioning to the Office of Community Schools where it will grow and expand to meet the increasingly diverse needs of all students more effectively and efficiently. Although it may have a new name and new operational structure, our mission remains the same; Provide each and every student with expanded and enriched learning experiences, with the help of active family and community engagement. This transition will provide GCPS students with access to the successful practices of mentoring that will impact the entire family, resulting in a greater sense of belonging.
The Office of Community Schools will work collaboratively with the surrounding community, local schools and district leaders, to expand the reach of the mentoring program. Operating under the district’s cluster model, Community School Coordinators have been assigned to each cluster. Their primary role is to work with students and their families to make sure they get the support and services they need to be successful. One of the ways they accomplish this is by connecting students and families with community partners who can provide those resources before and/or after school.
We want to thank the men and women who have supported the district’s mentoring efforts over the years. They have positively impacted the lives of countless students. Despite the many success stories however, our work is not done. In order to meet the needs of each and every student, we not only need the help of our current mentors, we need additional mentors as well as family and community allies willing to support our mission.
