1. Assessment Development

    GCPS  Teachers


    When does it occur?

     Annually based on need by content area and grade level. .


    What is involved? GCPS teachers are trained on the writing assessment design framework and components of high-quality writing assessments prior to working collaboratively to develop writing assessments and associated scoring rubrics. GCPS assessment experts review initial drafts of items.​ 

3. Field Testing

    When does it occur? Once per grade and content area based on published implementation plan.​ 


     Items approved after final reviews are administered to students.  What is involved?

5. Scoring of Field Tests

  • Who is involved? GCPS Teachers and Testing Vendor


    When does it occur?  Annually


    What is involved? Items are scored by GCPS teachers to train the AI tool, which completes scoring. The results are validated and analyzed. 

7. Operational Testing

  • Who is involved? GCPS District Leaders, Teachers, and Students


    When does it occur?  Annually


    What is involved? Final writing assessments are approved for continued use on summative writing assessments. 

  • The Gwinnett Writes assessment program includes a summative writing assessment and writing resources and classroom assessments as options for teachers to use in Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies for tested grades.     What is involved? Teachers review student responses and scoring guidelines to establish the range of acceptable responses for each item. 

6. Data Review of Field Tests
