Media Center Policies

  • Student Check-out Policy

All students may check out books for up to three weeks.

    In-Person Learners:

    • Kindergarten students may check out one book.
    • 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders may check out two books.
    • All grade levels will come with their class to the media center for book checkout.

    Digital Learners:

    • Books may be placed on hold through Destiny.
    • Once you receive a notice that your book(s) are ready, you may come to the media center to pick up your books.
    • K-1st will be able to checkout out up to 3 books at a time and/or place up to 3 books on hold
    • 2nd – 5th will be able to check out up to 5 books at a time and/or place up to 5 books on hold
    • The loan period for all books checked out is 3 weeks

Notices stating that books are ready for pickup will be emailed to parents.

    • If you do not receive a notice, then the book is not ready for pickup. :)

Students, please remember: Just like when we are in school, you will only be allowed one (1) graphic novel at a time to be checked out.

    • If you place a hold on multiple graphic novels or more than 5 books, we will pick what is available and delete the other requests. You will then need to place another hold.

Digital Learner Students will be held accountable for the books they check out.

    • If they forget to bring their books back, they will still be allowed to check out books one additional time. After that, they will need to return all books before being able to check out any more books.

    Overdue and Lost Book Policy

    • Overdue notices are sent out weekly in an email to teachers. Printed notices are sent home once a month.
    • Students with an overdue book will not be allowed to check out books.
    • Teachers are asked to encourage students to return books on time.
    • Students will receive their first overdue notice (overdue 1 - 5 days) on white paper. The second overdue notice (overdue 6 - 29 days) will be on teal paper.
    • If a student has an overdue book for more than 30 days, the book is automatically marked as “lost” and the parents will be sent an email, a yellow notice in their child's Friday Folder, or a notice in the mail requesting their assistance in locating the book.
    • Students who lose or damage a book beyond repair will be asked to pay a fine of $15 for a hardback and $5 for a paperback. A refund will be issued if the lost book is found within 60 days.

Gwinnett County School Board policy states that student records may be withheld at the end of the year until a student returns library materials or pays for their replacement
