Q&A District I Area Board and Town Hall Meeting
Thank you for your interest in Gwinnett County Public Schools and participation in the 2025 Area Board and Town Hall Meetings. As shared during the meeting, all questions are being addressed either live or with responses posted on the district website. The question submission tool used during the event is interactive and allows participants to “upvote” questions that resonate with them. Questions containing profanity were not accepted. Questions targeting employees have been included, but identifying names and titles have been removed.

- Is GCPS going to reconsider its position on the new Archer Middle School to follow the theme proposed by staff and vetoed by executive cabinet? If not, why not?
- What happened to the CS for All initiative? My child’s school no longer has computer science specials.
- What is the plan to continue to keep our students safe since the clear backpack trial was proven to not be the solution?
- Meanwhile, the county average for CCRPI is just 29. What is your plan to address what appears to be a crisis of underprepared graduates in Gwinnett County?
- Parapros in all SPED self-contained classes, need to receive the $3000 stipend. We are having to deal with an increase in physical and mental behaviors. TY
- Have you proposed or supported any specific budget items aimed at improving outcomes for economically disadvantaged students in your district?
- What is the budget plan for staff members for the 25-26 school year?
- What is the benefit of staying at a Title I school now that Title I teachers receive no additional compensation and the county-wide permissive transfer is gone?
- Will we get more custodians to support growth in the district?
- Gwinnett County’s district wide operational efficiency score is very low on the spectrum. This is a multi- million dollar opportunity being missed.
- How can we shift our priorities to ensure schools are prioritized over the increasing central office staff and under-staffed SROs?
- How does CCRPI correlate with a student’s readiness for college and career, and why should we take this number seriously when evaluating school success?
- Why hasn’t CCRPI been treated with the same urgency and systemic investment as K–3 literacy, given that it’s equally predictive of long-term student success?
- Why are MLL students not provided transportation to the International Transition Center and instead attend their home school without the adequate resources?
- There is a disconnect between Assessment and Curriculum Offices. This disconnect is apparent in the DAs. How can we address this?
- Ms. Stone: what are your top two priority traits for a new superintendent. Please be as specific as possible. Thank you.
- Ms. Stone, why do the work sessions seem like interrogations of the staff? If you already know the agenda, can you and the other Bans send them ahead of time?
- What do you think are the issues in District 1 and what are your plans to solve them?
- Why can’t Gwinnett county employees take our kids to any school we choose.
- There’s a $10MIL+ dollar annual opportunity costs being missed across operations, cybersecurity, & nutrition. How are you scoring operational efficiency?
- Can communication to parents be improved? Some things should be communicated directly to parents instead of expecting a child to share the information w/ us.
- How can we improve parent communication at the middle and high school levels? Often, parents receive information through their kids not the school directly.
- What are you planning to do to improve traffic in and around the Dacula Middle School entrance and parking lot? its unreasonably congested, and dangerous.
- What is the plan to improve discipline for the next school year to ensure students and staff are safe. There should be a focus on student accountability.
- Why are upgrades only important when there is a meeting taking place instead of maintaining? Painting, fixing the stage in the last week just for this.
- Considering the recent and ongoing news about student athletes, will Gwinnett County be among the first to improve athletic programs for their development?
- Can essential life skills be added to the curriculum? How to fill out a job application, fill out a w9 form, managing debit/credit, etc.
- When will the Gwinnett Taxpayers be informed of the superintendent finalists?
- Is GCPS deleting our questions here a suppression of free speech?
- What can be done about administrators who retaliate against staff?
- Will teachers ever be allowed to evaluate their administration?
- How does the district plan to support ESOL students in graduating as schools cut ESOL II and III due to them not being a graduation requirement anymore?
- Will those security guards be armed? Other school districts partner with the county and sheriff's office. Can gcps do the same?
- Why do we have summer leadership summer our break? Has a poll been done to hear the voices of the local school and not county personnel?
- In the future, will Gwinnett continue its policy of no planning periods for elementary teachers two days a week with CLTs?
- Dr. Taylor, CCRPI measures how well schools prepare students for life after graduation. Can you briefly explain what CCRPI is and what it measures?
- What is the plan to ensure that every school in the county has an SRO?
- What strategies are being implemented to address the disparities among District 1 high schools below the GCPS average of 1016 and Georgia state average of 1030?
- When will the district learn about the receipt of federal funds? If less is received than expected, will GCPS adjust the mill rate?
- We have a pilot for interactive monitors here. Did teachers ask for this and how does it help students learn? How will pilot be evaluated for success?
- What’s the process for vendor selections?
- What will be the role of security guards in elementary schools—temporary until more SROs are hired or a sub for SRO’s?
- How did GCPS increase staff to support students with disabilities? Did this happen at the local school level?
- What measures are being taken to ensure that our students receive individualized instruction despite the challenges posed by large classroom sizes?
- The security guards. What specialized training would allow them to be an effective counter measure from an armed intruder?
- So, do these unarmed security guards have some John Wick training or do we just plan to use them a fodder?
- Those who serve students receiving special education services are injured by students every day. What can be done to better protect them when MPP and SROs can’t
- Will board meetings continue to be planned at the last minute, giving schools little to no time to prepare?
- How do you plan on supporting arts education in our schools when your board meeting has forced arts students out of their own space?
- How does the district plan to address the graduation rate for ESOL students now that ESOL II and III classes don’t count for graduation?
- With the addition of Murphy MS, and other building additions, does that mean District 1 should expect redistricting?
- What data has the district used to weigh the cost-benefit ratio of PBIS in high schools versus other investments like counseling staff?
- Have you all reconsidered the use of clear backpacks in order to increase student safety (or any other specific measures like gun detectors)
- Our schools are bursting at the seams and only growing. Can the board take action to stop the overdevelopment that our schools can’t handle?
- Why isn't there a College and Career academy in GCPS? Newton and Rockdale have great models and the students seem to be thriving.
- While campaigning, Ms. Stone - you shared you’d like to look into our SWSS waivers more. What have you been able to learn?
- Q 5: Beyond internal school efforts, what community groups or partnerships have you engaged to bring wraparound services and support into District 1 schools?
- 1: Ms. Stone, all high schools in your district have over 40% of students classified as economically disadvantaged. Is this affecting student academic outcomes?
- As an elected official and former GCPS teacher, Ms. Stone, don’t you think Gwinnett’s teachers would benefit from the donation of your stipend?
- Ms. Stone, you stressed communication and transparency, but why do you not respond to constituents' emails about Dr. Watts' dismissal?
- This question is for Ms. Stone. Is there anything we can do about the SWSS waivers? Small class sizes (required by law) are in the best interest of our students
- Rachel Stone, why does the school board seem to work and make decisions separately from GCPS? Aren’t we on the same team?
- Why do Board members refer to the “district” as if we are all separate? Why the intentional use of divisive language?
- What specific steps or strategies are you taking to raise CCRPI scores and overall academic performance in District 1’s most challenged schools?
- CGHS has 66% students facing poverty, with 36% reading proficiency, 30% in math, and 11% passing an AP exam. Its CCRPI score is 13.4. What should be done?
