Understanding E-SPLOST: Maintaining and Enhancing Our Schools
Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) engages in a year-round budget process that involves citizens, educators, and students. In GCPS, we are committed to fostering a learning environment where every student feels valued, supported, and included. We are committed to leveraging resources to provide students with opportunities and access to programs and supports they need to learn, grow, and thrive.
What is E-SPLOST?
An E-SPLOST is a Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) for education. It is a one-cent sales tax on all retail purchases in Gwinnett County. This means that everyone who makes a purchase in Gwinnett County, including visitors, contributes to the support of local schools. By law, an E-SPLOST can be used only for certain capital projects, like buildings, furnishings, buses, and computers. It cannot be used for the day-to-day operational expenses of a school system.
Since 1997, Gwinnett County schools have benefited from a special sales tax (E-SPLOST) that helps fund education. In November 2022, voters approved an extension of this 1% sales tax for another five years. This is the sixth time the tax has been renewed. It is expected to raise up to $984.6 million, with about $27.5 million going to Buford City Schools. The remaining $957.1 million will support school building projects and technology improvements across the district.
How does E-SPLOST benefit out students?
Improved Learning Environments
- New classrooms and schools: Funds from E-SPLOST are used to build new classrooms and schools to prevent overcrowding, ensuring each student has a comfortable space to learn.
- Modern technology: E-SPLOST provides up-to-date computers, tablets, and other tools that make learning engaging and relevant for students.
Enhanced School Safety
- Security upgrades: The tax helps pay for security cameras, secure entrances, and other measures to keep our children safe at school.
- Transportation safety: Funds are used to purchase new school buses, ensuring students have safe and reliable transportation.
Why support E-SPLOST?
Supporting E-SPLOST means investing in our children’s education and safety. By contributing just one cent on the dollar, we can provide better learning environments and ensure our schools are safe places for all students. It’s a small contribution that makes a big difference in our community.
- Shared Contribution: Everyone who shops in our county contributes, including visitors.
- Direct Impact: Funds go directly to school improvements and safety measures.
- No Increase in Property Taxes: This sales tax helps fund school projects without raising property taxes.
