Mentor Gwinnett is a 3-year research-based program that partners with local schools to accelerate new employee effectiveness and to improve teacher retention.
The guiding principles of Mentor Gwinnett are:

Lead Mentor Role
A Lead Mentor is a teacher leader who coordinates the school’s new teacher mentoring and induction program in order to:
- Accelerate new employee effectiveness to improve student achievement
- Cultivate a culture of collaboration
- Partner with administration to develop a New Teacher Mentoring and Induction Committee (NTMIC)
- Plan, facilitate, and evaluate professional learning for mentors and new employees
- Implement a framework of district and school supports
Lead Mentor Responsibilities
During the program, Lead Mentors must be able to:
- Partner with administration and lead the local school New Teacher Mentoring and Induction Committee (NTMIC) to plan and facilitate the induction program
- Monitor best practices for induction with support from the New Teacher Mentoring and Induction Committee (NTMIC)
- Partner with administration to identify, assign, and support mentors as part of the overall induction program
- Mentor at least one new employee
- Attend monthly meetings at the ISC
Principal Considerations for Lead Mentor
Factors for principals to consider when nominating their Lead Mentor:
Lead Mentors must have:
- 3+ years of teaching experience
- 1+ year teaching experience in GCPS
- Proficient and/or exemplary on all GTES standards
- Positive impact on student achievement
- Evidence of leadership capabilities
- Interest in mentoring new teachers
**The Office of Leadership and Staff Development covers the stipend on one Lead Mentor (LM). The local school will assume the cost of additional Lead Mentors. The Lead Mentor stipend is a Title I allowable expense.
Process for Principal Recommendation
- Principal selects one Lead Mentor using the roles, responsibilities, and considerations in this document
- Principal recommends candidate by February 21, 2025
- Recommended candidates will receive an application by March 7, 2025
- Candidates complete application and submit by March 21, 2025
- After a selection process, accepted candidates will be notified by March 31, 2025
**Each principal should select an Administrator Sponsor to oversee their induction program.
**The Administrator Sponsor is highly encouraged to attend the orientation session with their Lead Mentor.
