South Gwinnett High School's staff monitors are ready for duty!

South Gwinnett High School has initiated a movement to promote school safety that extends beyond the classroom. South Gwinnett's staff are stationed throughout the school's hallways to create an ecosystem of student well-being, engagement, and positive behavior.

“School leadership sets the tone for a safe and welcoming environment by ensuring strong adult visibility, enforcing clear expectations, and promoting a culture of respect and support. Leaders foster positive relationships, address concerns proactively, and implement strategic safety measures to create a secure and inclusive school community,” says South Gwinnett High Principal Rodney Jordan.

Since the implementation of staff monitoring, attendance issues have decreased by more than 85%, accompanied by a decline in referrals of over 40% and out-of-school suspensions of more than 35%.

“I feel like the relationships between teachers, students, and administrators are much closer now,” says South Gwinnett High student Elizabeth Cates. “Teachers, campus monitors, and administrators are always present in the hallways, engaging with students and ensuring everyone meets expectations. If a student needs guidance or support, there’s always an adult available to help. Our school spirit is the strongest I’ve ever seen—especially as a senior who has witnessed the transformation firsthand.”

Jordan states that this transition has had a significant impact on South Gwinnett High’s learning community, with positive feedback from parents, guardians, and local community partners.

“With a strong foundation in place, we can now prioritize teacher development and enhance instruction to drive student success. These improvements have also led to two years of strong teacher retention, reinforcing our commitment to stability and excellence,” Jordan adds.
