SRO Mentoring Program: Making a positive impact on students' lives

Elevating student voice begins with creating a safe space, where students can express themselves and learn in a comfortable environment. Our School Resource Officers (SRO) are not only trusted officials at our schools, but our students look to them for leadership. As mentors, through the School Resource Officers Mentoring Program, SROs at various schools across the district participate in group activities that focus on budgeting, conflict resolution, resume building, and other community-building opportunities.

“Building a rapport is very important to have a successful mentor group. The students request to be a part of the mentee group usually by word of mouth from their peers,” says Officer Ronnetta Coates at Alcova Elementary School. “They see the benefits of being a part of the mentor group and how the mentor group has impacted the other students' lives. I am transparent with the students and provide leadership in a positive way.”

The program has three focuses: Law Enforcement, Counseling/Mentoring, and Law-Related Education. Together, these focuses improve each school community both inside and outside of the classroom.

“Students have demonstrated significant positive transformations, exhibiting improved academic performance and behavioral conduct,” says Officer Brian Bergman at Moore Middle School. “I believe the program has made significant gains in fostering trust and open communication with my students, which transcend the classroom environment to include personal and social struggles they are experiencing.”
