Evolv is now in all GCPS high schools

The implementation of Evolv weapons detection systems in Gwinnett County Public Schools has progressed to the next stage. The security system is now operating in every high school throughout the district. The completion of the Evolv installation aligns with the district’s safety and security initiatives.

Executive Director of Academic Support Eric Thigpen says GCPS aims to rise above the challenges facing schools nationwide surrounding school safety.

“School safety is a complex challenge that schools across the nation continue to face,” Thigpen says. “Our commitment is to provide a safe and secure learning environment for each and every student and staff member.”

To achieve this, the district follows a comprehensive three-pronged approach:

  • Prevention – Taking proactive steps to prevent school violence.
  • Protection and Mitigation – Safeguarding our school environment and minimizing risks.
  • Response and Recovery – Responding effectively and recovering quickly from incidents.

“The implementation of Evolv serves as a force multiplier within this approach,” Thigpen adds. “It strengthens our ability to maintain safe, weapons-free campuses and complements existing measures such as cameras, Raptor, SSOs, SROs, secure vestibules, and GCPS Tips. Together, these layers create a robust safety network that prioritizes the well-being of our students and staff.”

GCPS began the Evolv implementation in 2024, piloting it at three high schools. After a successful pilot, GCPS moved forward with a full implementation, which is scheduled to be completed by March 2026, and will now include all middle schools.

“Installing the EVOLV system has strengthened our commitment to safety,” says Collins Hill High School Principal Lee Augmon. “It’s heightened awareness and reinforced the importance of protocols like keeping doors locked and ensuring all visitors enter through designated doors and wear badges.”

In addition to various security measures such as vestibules, Raptor, School Resource Officers (SROs), cameras, and School Safety Officers (SSOs), students have access to the GCPS Tips app, which allows them to make anonymous reports about safety hazards or dangers on campus.
