    An audition and interview are required for admittance to the SOTA Conservatory Program. Read the audition requirements carefully. Complete an application to receive an audition appointment.

  • Art & Design Conservatory

    Art & Design Conservatory Audition Requirements

    The Art & Design audition has three components: an art portfolio and interview, a drawing task, as well as a sculpture and photography task. A scoring rubric for the audition process is included.

    Each candidate will collect and present five sample pieces of their choosing in the art portfolio. This portfolio provides candidates the opportunity to discuss their art interests, process, and reasoning behind the portfolio collection.  The student will also be asked to complete two art-making tasks on-site during the audition. 

    Art & Design Portfolio

    The art & design portfolio is a collection of sample original artworks showcasing the artist’s interests, techniques, and conceptual ideas.  The art & design portfolio for the audition must contain a total of five(5) original artworks by the artist.  The artist should be prepared to explain the sample artworks and the reason each is included in the portfolio.

    Sample works of art might include: 

    • Series of doodle drawings
    • Series of sketches
    • Original photography
    • School projects such as, but not limited to, t-shirt designs, posters, etc.
    • Developed artist journal or sketchbook pages (counts as 1 piece)
    • Finished 2D pieces such as, but not limited to, paintings, drawings, or collages
    • Small finished 3D pieces
    • Pieces that show artist’s skill in multiple media (pencil, ink, charcoal, paint)
    • Pieces completed in Art & Design workshop

    Sample works can range in size from 8.5 x 11” to no larger than 18 x 24”.  Notebook paper is acceptable, but consider how to best present your ideas.  All work should be original from the artist’s own hands and not plagiarized in any way.

    Drawing Task

    During the audition, students will be required to complete a drawing task.  Students will be guided through drawing from observation and completing a still-life drawing. The drawing will be evaluated based on completion of the drawing and evidence of basic understandings of the Elements of Art and concepts taught during the drawing task. All drawing materials will be provided, but students may bring their own if they wish to do so. Students will have approximately 45 minutes to complete the drawing.

    Sculpture and Photography Task

    During the audition, students will be asked to complete a paper sculpture and photography task.  The sculpture task will include creating a sculpture using materials provided.  The sculpture task will be evaluated on completion of the task and evidence of basic understanding of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. All materials will be provided. Students will have approximately 45 minutes to complete the sculpture task.

    Students will then have a few minutes to photograph their sculpture in an interesting way.  Students will use provided digital cameras. Photographs will be evaluated on completion of the task and evidence of basic understanding of the Elements of Art.  

    *NOTE: For the 2021-2022 auditions, we have removed the photography task due to health and safety concerns

  • Dance Conservatory

    Dance Conservatory Audition Requirements 

    The Dance audition has three components: a technique class (ballet, modern, jazz, and improvisation), a short interview with the judges, and a solo performed by the candidate. A scoring rubric for the audition process is included.

    Part One: The technique class and improvisation session will be performed in a large group setting.

    Part Two: The short interview will be conducted with the judges and the candidate only.

    Part Three: The solo will be performed directly after the personal interview with the judges and the candidate only.

    Technique Class:

    The technique class will include:

    -Thirty minutes of ballet technique (barre and center work)

    -Thirty minutes of modern technique (floor and standing center work)

    -Thirty minutes of jazz technique (across the floor and combination)

    -Thirty minutes of teacher led improvisation

    Technique Class Attire:

    -For both male and female: Tight fitting all black attire including tank tops, short or long sleeve shirts, capri or full length leggings, or compression shorts (at least two inches in length) NO RUNNING SHORTS OR BAGGY CLOTHES!

    -Candidates may wear leotards and tights (black leotard with pink, black, or skin tone convertible tights)

    -Footwear: Ballet slippers or socks, jazz shoes or socks (for modern and improvisation candidates will be barefoot)

    -All hair should be secured back tightly so as not to inhibit any movement. Hair must be secured out of the face.

    Short Interview:

    -Each judge will ask the candidate one question that allows the candidate to talk about their interest in dance as an art form and how dance has shaped their life.

    Dance Solo:

    -Candidates may perform any dance genre, including but not limited to: ballet, modern, jazz, contemporary, tap, world dance, hip hop, clogging, etc. Any genre of dance that the candidate feels confident performing

    -Music provided by the candidate: CD, MP3 player, Phone with appropriate adaptor, Flash Drive

    -Candidate may choose to do solo without music

    -Length: forty five seconds - one and a half minutes. Must not exceed 90 seconds.

    Dance Solo Attire:

    -Candidates may wear their technique class attire or they may choose to wear something that enhances their dance solo such as a costume. For example: If the candidate does a Bollywood solo, they may choose to wear a chaniya choli, or if the candidate chooses to do a solo en pointe, they may choose to wear a black leotard, pink tights and a ballet skirt or tutu. 

    -Foot wear should be appropriate for the dance genre being performed.

  • Music Technology & Audio Production Conservatory

    Music Technology & Audio Production Audition Requirements

    The Music Technology & Audio Production audition has three components: a small group interview, a set of rhythmic tasks, and a music aptitude test.

    MAT (musical aptitude test)

    This task will take approximately 30 minutes.  Some of the tasks will require that the adjudicator work with the candidate individually, while other tasks will be taken on a computer.

    Rhythm Game

    Additionally, candidates will participate in a rhythm circle where students take a solo in order to feel their rhythm capability.

    Interview

    Candidates will participate in two small group interview sessions.

  • Theatre Conservatory

    Theatre Conservatory Audition Requirements

    The Theatre Conservatory Audition has three components: monologue & song, dance or movement combo, and interview. A scoring rubric for the audition process is included.

    Part 1: Monologue & Song

    Candidates will have a 2 minute time slot in which to perform one monologue and one song. Candidates  may perform their monologues and/or song in the order of their choosing.  

    Monologues: Candidates are expected to perform one 60 second monologue. Sources may include published stage plays or online resources. Candidates will introduce their material, which will include the student's first and last name and the full title of the material before beginning their performance.  Monologues can be either comedic or dramatic.  

    Song: Candidates should prepare and perform from memory a 1 minute song in either a pop or musical  theatre style. Accompaniment tracks may be used and should be on flash drive, CD, or phone. There  should be no recorded vocal backing on the track.

    No props or costumes should be used.

    Part 2: Dance/Movement Audition

    Candidates may choose to participate in either the Dance combo or the Movement combo. Candidates will be taught a dance or movement combo and perform it in small groups. The Dance combo is for candidates who have a dance background. If you have had no formal dance training, you may do the Movement combo.

    Candidates should bring clothes that are comfortable to move in for this portion of the audition. 

    Jazz or Ballet shoes are preferred for the Dance combo. Dance shoes are not required for the Movement combo; tennis shoes will be fine.

    Part 3: Interview

    Following the dance activity, the candidates will participate in a talkback discussion led by the instructor that will serve as the interview portion of the audition.

    Candidates may, but are not expected to, bring a resume’ and/or headshot to the audition. If candidates select to do so, only one copy of each is necessary.

  • Voice Conservatory

    Voice Audition Requirements

    Voice candidates will perform a 3 part vocal audition and participate in a small group interview. A scoring rubric for the audition process is included.

    Part 1: Solo

    Each candidate is asked to prepare and sing from memory a 1-2 minute song in any of the following styles: classical, musical theatre, pop, or hymn.

    Part 2: Scales

    Each candidate will sing a Major Scale, ascending and descending, with accurate intonation; using solfege, numbers, or neutral “la”. 

    Each candidate will sing a Natural Minor Scale, ascending and descending, with accurate intonation; using solfege, numbers, neutral “la”. 

    Each candidate will sing a Chromatic Scale, ascending and descending, with accurate intonation; using solfege, numbers, neutral “la”.

     

    Part 3: Sight Reading

    Each candidate will sight sing two 4 measure melodic/rhythmic examples. The first example will be in a major key. The second example will be in a minor key. 

    Each candidate will be given the block chord, arpeggio, and first pitch in order to establish tonality. Each candidate will have 30 seconds to practice the example. 

    Each candidate may choose to sing using solfege, numbers, or a neutral syllable such as “la.”
