• 2022-2023 NGHS Cheerleading Tryouts

    • All information could be subject to change once we get any updates from the GHSA on dates for the 2022-2023 school year.
    • Meeting with upcoming 9th-grade cheerleaders and parents on February 2nd in CLC at 6:30pm.
    • We will have a tumbling block at CDA in the near future. We will have that information at the parent meeting.

The athlete must register by March 4, 2022, online to try out.  Go to ngcheer.com, click on the athlete information sheet, and fill it out completely. If you decide later that you do not want to try out, please email Kathy.Johnson@gcpsk12.org

In order to try out for cheerleading at North Gwinnett High School, you must meet all of the following requirements:

    1. You must be academically eligible.  If you are a sophomore, junior, or senior, you need to have passed 5 out of 6 classes in the previous term (incoming freshmen are automatically eligible for the fall).
    2. You must have a current physical on file with the high school.  Physicals do not transfer from other schools.  Upcoming 9th graders will need to contact Kathy Johnson on Rank One for physicals.  All others will have to go to Rank One to do all forms. Information will be attached with instructions to use Rank One.
    3. You must attend all days of tryouts for the squad(s) for which you are trying out.
    4. Varsity football spirit will be 11th and 12th graders only, JV football spirit will be 10th graders and 9th football spirit will be 9th graders only.  Game Day will be the best 24 cheerleaders we have on any of our spirit teams. For the basketball cheer season, grade level will not apply to be on a team.
    5. For Varsity competition, tumbling will be required – a minimum of a standing tuck, running tumbling (at least a layout), a clean 3 jump sequence, a standing back handspring to tuck. Running and standing fulls are preferred. Stunting requirements include a switch kick & full up in the same sequence with a full down cradle. (You are expected to take Girls 2nd period PE Class)
    6. For JV competition, we would like you to work on tumbling.  We would like a minimum of a standing back handspring, a clean 3 jump sequence, and running tumbling with a tuck.  Stunting requirements are half-ups and full downs from one-legged stunts. (You are expected to take Girls 2nd period PE Class)
    7. For Varsity Football and Varsity Basketball, you must be able to do a one-legged stunt. Motions, dance, and jumps are a large part of the score. We do look at tumbling (Should take Girls 2nd period PE Class)

We strongly encourage you to work on the following things before tryouts.

    1. Jumps:  We will require several jumps at tryouts.  Work on your height and form.
    2. Motions:  We will drill motions at tryouts, and we expect you to be working on your sharpness and form.
    3. Voice: You need to be loud and efficient.
    4. Stunting: Work to do your best with stunting.  We expect more at each level.  Work to be flexible in what positions you can do and with whom you stunt.
    5. Tumbling:  Athletes wishing to cheer competitively should work to gain and improve tumbling.  Tumbling is NOT required to make a spirit squad, but still highly encouraged.
    6. Strength and Stamina:  Athletes are expected to be in shape and able to complete practice.  Those cheering competitively should be capable of completing a routine without being completely winded.  We encourage strength training and aerobic workouts.
    7. Dance: Dance skills are required for all squads; a high level of dance skills is required to make Varsity Basketball.
