What is culture? According to Purdue University, “Culture is that which shapes us; it shapes our identity and influences our behavior. Culture is our ‘way of being,’ more specifically, it refers to the shared language, beliefs, values, norms, behaviors, & material objects that are passed down from one generation to the next.”"All Together”
is the 2021 theme for the inaugural Cultural Awareness art competition.Basic Information: North Gwinnett Middle School will be holding an art program to celebrate our Cultural Diversity Week, which will be held February 22-26, 2021. Students should create an original work that connects to the theme: “All Together.”
Arts Categories: There are three arts categories – visual arts, literature, and photography. Students are welcome to submit one or more entries.
Requirements:- Students should include a title for their artwork and an artist statement.
- Entries must be the original work of one student.
- Students may not use copyrighted materials.
- Plagiarism will result in disqualification.
- Additional information for each category is listed below.
Judging: All art entries will be judged on the following:
- Interpretation of the theme- “All Together”
- Artistic merit
- Creative merit
- Technical merit
- Student’s Choice: The student body will be allowed to vote on their favorite entry.
Dates:
- February 19, 2021: Final date to submit entries to Mrs. Stark (see reverse for details)
- February 22-26, 2021: Student work on display in the media center for student voting.
- February 26, 2021: Winners announced during morning announcements on the final day of the week.

Additional Information Regarding Each Category
Literature Requirements & Submissions:
- May be fiction or nonfiction
- Prose and poetry are both allowed
- Entries must not exceed 2,000 words
- Entries should be typed in a legible font
- Submit your literature entry with a completed entry form (scanned or photo will be acceptable)
- Email your literature entry to Mrs. Stark at jenny.h.stark@gcpsk12.org. Look for a confirmation email
Photography:
- Must be an original black-and-white or color image
- May be a single print or a collage
- Mount the picture on some type of sturdy material (cardboard mat, poster board, etc.)
- Submit photograph with a completed student entry form.
- Submit your entry in person to Mrs. Stark in the media center. Digital students may drop off projects in the front lobby of the school.
Visual Arts:
- Must be an original print, drawing, painting, collage, photographic collage, sculpture, ceramics or computer-generated artwork
- Mount the artwork on some type of sturdy material (cardboard mat, poster board, etc.)
- Submit artwork with a completed student entry form.
- Submit your entry in person to Mrs. Stark in the media center. Digital students may drop off projects in the front lobby of the school.
Deadline: February 19th at 4 p.m. - No late entries will be accepted. Thank you for understanding.
The Student Entry Form must be completed in its entirety. Please submit a completed student entry form for each piece of artwork submitte.
