Varsity - Coach Robert Rawson
Coach Rawson finished up his 18th year this year as a golf coach at Berkmar. Coach Rawson is from Prattville, Alabama were he was taught golf by his father, uncle, and grandfather. He has over 35 years of golf experience, including being a collegiate golfer at Oglethorpe University, having the privilege of being a part of a school that has now gone to the National NCAA tournament for 21 consecutive years, and has won two National tournaments. He still enjoys playing golf on his own with friends and loves the social and competive nature that golf can offer people of all ages and backgrounds.
Girls Varsity - Coach Walter Johnson
Coach Johnson is well known within the Berkmar athletic circle because of the his coaching experience with the girls basketball teams and youth leagues. His enthusiasm and dedication young people is evident in every time you see him. Coach Johnson is a Vietnam Veteran and respected by us all because of his service to our country. Coach Johnson enjoys playing golf while he is retirement, but finds time to give back to the community by participating in programs that help grow the game of golf such as the First Tee Program of Atlanta and the GBA (Georgia Black Association) golf association in Athens.)
The golf team had a stellar turn out this year with a total of nine players, five girls and four boys, on the Varsity Team: Kevin Delgado, Duane Glass, Selma Hassan, Nancy Criolla, Ashley Magana , Brenda Montes, Willie Neamie, Sid Simpara, and Alizon Valenci
Our returning players were Duane Glass, Kevin Delgado, and Selma Hassan. We will be sad to see Duane go as he ends his senior year at Berkmar and heads off to college. However, he will take his love for golf with him and will continue enjoy playing with friends and family as well as stay in touch with the team. Diuane’s love for the game and determination was evident by all who know him and will be missed.
Duane Glass, Kevin Delgado, and Willie Nemeth had the honor of representing Berkmar in the Region Tournament at Summit Chase Country Club on April 30th and had a very respectful showing, with Willie Neamie having the low score for our team. Congratulations to you all! They were able to finish an 18 hole round competing with the best players in the county on a very difficult course.
All players have made huge strides in their growth of the game and we our very fortunate to have most returning next year. Some players are also going to continue to play competitive golf over the summer. With this growth and experience, the coaches feel confident that our team can make a strong showing next season.
