    Gifted Department:

The Gwinnett County Public Schools gifted education program serves students in grades K-12 by providing academic challenges for those students who are intellectually advanced.  The classes offer enriched academic curriculum experiences that focus on extending the Gwinnett County Public Schools’ core curriculum, the Academic Knowledge and Skills. Students are identified and placed in gifted education based on criteria established by the Georgia State Board of Education See below). Students who transfer from gifted education programs within the State of Georgia have reciprocity into the Gwinnett program. Students who transfer from out-of-state must meet Georgia requirements. Parents should notify the school when registering their child that he/she was identified as a gifted education student in their previous school. Teachers or parents may refer a student to the local school’s gifted referral committee (see below).

    How to Qualify:

Students in grades 1, 2 and 5 are screened each year for consideration into the gifted program. The gifted department will typically use COGAT and ITBS scores to determine which students should be further tested for possible placement in the gifted program. Parents who wish to have their 1st, 2nd or 5th grader screened must inform the gifted department in writing prior to October 1 of that school year.

Students in 3rd and 4th grade are typically only screened if they have moved into Georgia from out of state. Parents who wish to request that their 3rd or 4th grade student be screened must inform the gifted department in writing prior to August 15 of that school year.

Students may only be tested once in K-2, and once in 3-5. If your child was screened in K-2 and did not qualify, please wait to request any further testing until they are in grades 3-5.

In order to qualify students must meet the state criteria in three out of four areas. These four areas are Academic Achievement, Mental Ability, Creativity and Motivation.
