General Information

  • The goal of the GCPS Community School program is to extend education and recreation to the community. The Community School is an extension of North Gwinnett High School and reaches out as a basic learning center to meet the various continuing education needs of our community. We strive to serve as a creative, quality community environment committed to developing and providing programs of academic and recreational enrichment for all members of our community.

    We offer after-hours classes such as Driver Education, SAT Prep classes. We are always seeking input and suggestions for new Community School classes, so please let us know what you are interested in.

    We also offer the community the ability to rent the facilities at the High School and our cluster schools (North Gwinnett Middle School, and Riverside, Level Creek, Suwanee, and Roberts Elementary Schools).

    Matt Garner's Go for the Goal Basketball Camp

    Targeted Ages: 6-15 

    Dates/Times: July 11-14th  (9:00 am – 4:00 pm) 

    Location: NGHS Gyms 

    Cost: $225 if registered by June 1st ($250 after) 

    Includes instruction in basketball fundamentals and a camp t-shirt

     

    Culinary Camp

    Camp Cuisine – A Summer in Paris

    • Young Chefs (7-10 years old):  This is a culinary camp with the young chef in mind.  Basic culinary skills, including cooking safely, knife skills, and basic food preparations. The theme this year is French cuisine. 
    • Chefs in Training (11-13 years old):  This is a culinary camp with our 11-13 year old chefs.  Skills taught are more advanced but still within reach if your child is unfamiliar with the kitchen.  The theme this year is French cuisine. 
    • Cooking with our Kids (parent/child duos):  This is an evening class designed for a parent and child cooking duo.  Each class is a two -day evening class with a different theme.  The objective is that this class is a springboard for cooking with your kids at home.

    What is included in this cost: Hands-on instruction with Chef Lara Knapp-Storm and her fabulous culinary pathway students.  Chef hat and apron. Recipes.  Ingredients.  Young Chefs and Chefs in Training camps include a light hors d’ oeuvre reception for family with all foods prepared by our young chefs. Cooking with our Kids includes a take-home menu item. 

  • ACT/SAT Prep Class

    Course Details:  SAT/ACT Prep – Reading, Writing, and English Sections only

    Class Dates:   2/22/22 - 3/31/22 (6 weeks, 2 sessions/ week)

    Class Time:    3:00 PM-5:00 PM every Tuesday and Thursday

    Class Location:  Classroom 103 at North Gwinnett High School

    Fee Details:  $375.00 – includes 24 hours of In-Person instruction and all materials

     

    The North Gwinnett Community School is pleased to present ACT and SAT (English) prep classes for our students.  The schedule of this session allows maximum preparation for the ACT administration on April 2nd and SAT administration on May 7th.  The class will be taught by Ms. Sujatha Thota, a Suwanee resident with many years of successful work in tutoring and test preparation.  She will delve into specific ACT and SAT Reading and Writing sections in a manner that is systematic, straightforward, and easy to understand.  Ms.Thota holds a master’s degree and is a GACE Certified teacher in reading, writing, and mathematics with years of experience in teaching privately, at the college level, and at tutoring institutes. She also holds a certificate from the University of Georgia in Teaching English for Speakers of Other Languages, giving her unique insights into the needs of non-native speakers of English.

  • Career Exploration and College Planning

    The NGHS Counseling Office and the NGHS Community School are pleased to offer a 2-part informational session to help you and your student(s) explore their career interests and begin the college planning process.  These information sessions will go into more depth than the students currently receive during counselor lessons or that is presented during parent nights.  The first evening will focus on career exploration, giving you and your student(s) a variety of research tools and time to start the research process.  The second evening will focus on the college planning process, identifying colleges that offer pathways aligned with careers identified in the previous week, and an overview of financial aid and scholarships.  The course is free of charge.  The dates will be Tuesday, April 12, 2022 and Tuesday, April 19, 2022 from 6:00pm - 7:00pm each night.  To register and reserve a seat for you and your student(s), go to mypaymentsplus.com, Events and Activities, Community School, NGCS (North Gwinnett Community School), and choose Career Exploration and College Planning.  

  • Driver's Education

    Driver’s Education Classes

    The North Gwinnett Community School offers driver’s education classes throughout the school year and two classes over the summer.  The class includes thirty hours of classroom instruction and six hours of behind the wheel driving practice with a state certified instructor.  During the school year, the classes run  2:45-5:45 for ten consecutive school days and the driving times are scheduled around the students’ schedules after the classroom portion is completed.  Summer classes are held 8AM-2PM for five consecutive days.  Classes are not held on holidays or other times when school is not in session.  The cost for this instruction is $345.00 with registration and payment made through MyPaymentsPlus. 

    Due to the Covid-19 situation, all classroom instruction is currently via Zoom session and the students drive one-on-one with the instructor in a sanitized vehicle with both the student and the instructor wearing masks. 

    We also offer extra drive hours in two-hour increments.  This can be for those who have taken an online class and still need 6 drive hours or for those wishing additional time behind the wheel prior to licensure.  Please register for these available slots on MyPaymentsPlus.

  • Summer Online Personal Fitness* and/or Health*    

     June 1, 2022 – July 1, 2022

    Health and PE (1/2 credit courses required for graduation) will be offered online through NGHS this summer semester to students who have not yet fulfilled the requirements. The courses are 4-week intensive courses designed to cover all Gwinnett County AKS with daily deadlines during the 4 week period. 

     COURSE DATES:  June 1, 2021 – July 1, 2022 

    Introductory Zoom Meeting & Class Orientation: Wednesday, June 1, 2022 

    • Health students attend zoom at 10:00am 
    • PE students attend zoom at 11:00am 

    Please note that these courses are being offered at an extra cost, and they are an intensive format. Because of the abbreviated length of the course(s), there is a required daily time commitment of several hours. You may register for one course or both courses. 

    Curriculum: 

    Health: Students are expected to read online content, participate in online discussions, complete writing assignments and take online unit tests. The course covers 16 units of material focusing on wellness, healthy choices, nutrition, physical fitness, systems of the body, mental health, Lifelines, Choosing the Best and ADAP. 

    PE: Students will create a personal fitness portfolio, complete and track weekly workouts, complete reading assignments, and take unit tests. Topics for study include lifelong fitness, training principles and nutrition. Students must have access to a smartphone for tracking and sharing workouts with the instructor. 

     Registration: 

    Complete registration @  https://www.mypaymentsplus.com  under the community school tab. If you are registering a current 8th-grade student, you will have to register using your own name, and we can change the student’s name later.  

    **PLEASE make sure that you register for the NGHS course, NOT the Gwinnett Online Campus (GOC) course. Registration is only available to the first 100 students in each class, so please register ASAP.  Registration will be available from February 1 – May 15.  

    Cost:   Each ½ credit course is $250.00
