For students with a sincere love for the care and medical treatment of animals, the Veterinary Science program will allow you to explore turning your passion for animals into a lifelong career.
In a state-of-the-art facility, you will work with animals, gaining the skills necessary to be prepared for admission into highly competitive college programs in Animal Science, Veterinary Medicine, and Veterinary Technology.
In addition to studying the history and evolution of various species, you will learn about breeds, anatomy, biomechanics and movement, genetics, reproduction, digestion and nutrition, health and behavior management, and animal housing. You will also establish a new vocabulary with the use of medical terminology. Classroom demonstrations will help you better understand life processes and the structure of organisms as you develop your observation skills.
Once these skills have been acquired, further learning opportunities will become available for those interested in participation within the Grayson Tech and Gwinnett Tech Surgical Suite. This will create a partnership in which surgical procedures will be performed within the classroom with the help of the Gwinnett County Animal Shelter, Gwinnett Technical College Veterinary Technology Program, and Grayson Technical Education Veterinary Science Program.
This classroom knowledge will be further explored at a local veterinary hospital by participating in an internship once a week second semester. Enrolling in the Veterinary Science program will offer you an unparalleled opportunity to explore the veterinary field before investing in years of further study.
Furthermore, an introduction to the student future healthcare organization, HOSA, will offer you co-curricular opportunities such as competing at state and international conventions. This provides opportunities in establishing relationships with fellow veterinary science students who share your common interests and networking with industry professionals.
This program will fulfill the fourth science requirement for graduation as well as the Board of Regents admission requirements.
