A major focus of the district is to “grow our own” as a way to increase the number of high-quality teachers within the district. Research has shown that more than 60% of teachers work within close proximity of where they attended high school and thus have an influence on the
communities where they attended school. With this in mind, we are intentionally looking within the district at current high school students who are interested in becoming future teachers. The Gwinnett Future Teachers Initiative is dedicated to supporting GCPS students interested in education-related careers. During the 2017-18 school year, 1,143 students were enrolled in Early Childhood Education and Teaching as a Profession course in 17 GCPS high schools. This past school year, over 1,500 students in grades 9-12 were enrolled, and 338 12th grade students completed coursework by the end of the school year. These numbers illustrate a strong potential pipeline of future teachers.Contact Heather Brindle or Daniel Boykin
