Mr. Gene Reed
Hi! My name is Gene Reed and I am an 8th Grade Social Studies Teacher at McConnell Middle School. I began teaching middle school in 2013 and I have worked in Gwinnett County Public Schools in various roles since 2006.
Before becoming a teacher, I earned a BS Degree in Electrical Engineering. During and after college, I was a member of the Georgia Army National Guard and active duty as an Army Officer at Fort Gordon, Georgia. After leaving the military, I worked as an engineer and manager at a variety of high-tech companies for several years. Along the way, I provided engineering support to NASA for their communications systems and did a lot of work with video and audio conference and presentation systems.
I have had the opportunity to travel quite a bit. At last count, I have visited over 150 cities, in 10 countries, on 3 continents. The furthest destination was Lhasa, Tibet, where I spent 12 days teaching Chinese and Tibetan engineers to install and support some new equipment.
I love to read. History and historical fiction are my favorites. Stories of the Old West are especially interesting since I was born just a few miles from the Chisholm Trail. My grandparents’ farm was actually on a part of the Trail. I also have a deep connection with Georgia. My great-great-grandmother and her family lived near the site of the Civil War battle of Griswoldville and were burned out by General Sherman in the “March to the Sea”.
My “spare” time is mostly taken up with my wife and two daughters, and being active in my church.
