Each year, Crews Middle School invites a select group of rising 7th grade students to participate in a two-yearlong high school level Spanish connections class. This class is designed for students to complete half of Level I Spanish in the seventh grade and the second half in eighth grade. Students who successfully complete Level I Spanish in eighth grade will be eligible to earn a Carnegie Unit (high school credit). Students will need to pass the course as well as take the Level 1 Spanish exam which includes a speaking and a writing performance assessment.
The Spanish connections class is a rigorous high school level course that is a two year commitment. Once the student has been placed in the class, the student will NOT be allowed to drop the year-long Spanish class. Students who have year-long Band, Orchestra, or Chorus and meet the eligibility requirements can be invited to sign up for Spanish. All students who meet the criteria will be eligible to have their names put into a lottery for selection to be invited.
2021-2022 Recommendation Requirements
The following criteria are considered for the 2021 Two-Yearlong Spanish class selection for rising 7th graders:
- All A's and B's first semester
- Recommendation from Language Arts teacher
- Timely work completion
A rubric is used to calculate a score for each eligible student. This rubric includes a scaled score for the following:
- 1st semester Language Arts grade
- 1st semester core academic grade average
- 5th Grade COGAT Verbal Score

Based on the rubric score, the top-tier of students is invited to take the course, and all remaining seats are to be determined by a lottery for those remaining students who meet the score criteria.
