Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) offers one of Georgia’s most robust Advanced Placement (AP) programs, providing high school students access to rigorous, college-level courses. With more than 30 AP courses across 23 high schools, students can explore subjects like AP Biology, AP U.S. History, and AP Computer Science while earning valuable college credits.

At McClure Health Science High School, senior Alvaro Saldarriaga Arcila has embraced the challenge of AP courses since arriving from Colombia in 2022. Despite language barriers, Alvaro has excelled. "I came here as an English learner, but I haven’t let that stop me," Alvaro says. "My AP classes have helped me understand what I want to do in the future, giving me confidence in my skills and intelligence." Alvaro, who discovered a passion for math through AP courses, now plans to pursue a career in engineering.

The AP program prepares students academically and helps them build critical thinking, problem-solving, and time management skills. “The AP program empowers students to immerse themselves in college-level material while still in high school,” says GCPS Director of Accelerated Programs & Gifted Dr. Keena Ryals-Jenkins. “This gives them a competitive edge when applying to colleges and allows them to enter ahead of their peers.”

Through the AP program, GCPS is committed to equipping students with the tools to succeed in college and beyond, building resilience and confidence along the way.
