The Grayson Technical Education Program at Grayson High School recently hosted a new, popular alternative rock band with deep connections to Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS). Percy “PC3” Crews and Christopher “Xelan” Bernard, founding members of The Paradox, dropped by Grayson High for an engaging conversation about the band’s experience in the music industry and its rise to stardom.

The Paradox was founded in June of 2024, and less than two years later, its single “Get the Message” rose to #1 on the Billboard Alternative Airplay charts in February of this year. The Paradox made history by becoming the first all-Black band to reach number one, breaking a glass ceiling for others in the genre.

PC3 and Xelan are also proud GCPS alumni. Xelan graduated from  Grayson High School/Grayson Tech in 2015, and PC3 graduated from Archer High School in 2019.

“A major takeaway from The Paradox's event was to trust the process,” says Grayson Tech student Quinn Nelson. “As fast as success may seem, it takes many years of work that people don’t see. So, don’t rush the process. Take each day as an opportunity to gradually improve your craft. That way, when a major opportunity does present itself, you will be amply prepared with the knowledge and skills to grow a successful career.”

In addition to participating in a panel-style discussion with PC3 and Xelan, students had the opportunity to engage with the band on a personal level, taking pictures and asking for career advice as artists and creatives. The Grayson Tech students also showed the band around their music studios and facilities.

“I kept in contact with the band and started to help them navigate through a few music industry things, and we were finally able to make it happen with their busy schedules,” says Music Technology Teacher Andre DeRamus “They achieved a major accomplishment of being the first African American band to reach #1 on the radio in the Punk Rock space with their song, ‘Get The Message’! I knew that this meant things were about to get major for them, so we had to make this happen ASAP before they get too big and out of reach!”
