Baggett Elementary School has launched a full athletics program for students in Kindergarten through 5th grade. The initiative began with a basketball opportunity, introduced by Paraprofessional and Coach Mjay Morris, which led to the creation of a more comprehensive and active athletics program. The current lineup includes T-ball, Flag Football, Basketball, Cheerleading, and Soccer. These activities not only help students stay active but also provide meaningful opportunities for community engagement. Baggett Elementary is further strengthening its connection with the Discovery cluster community by offering coaching opportunities to Discovery High School students, parents, and staff.

“Over the past four years, this program has been built on passion, dedication, and a genuine love for giving our students opportunities to grow through sports,” says Morris. “It truly means a lot to us to finally be able to share our story with the county and highlight the hard work, teamwork, and community support that made it all possible.”

The Baggett Elementary Athletics coaching team includes Jasmin Riley, Kyla Adams, Michael Greenberg, Shanteria Smith, and Verenice Romo. The soccer program has been the most successful, consistently attracting between 50 and 80 students. Although other schools may not have athletics programs, Baggett has managed to create “leagues” in which opposing teams among their own student body compete. To make the competition experience even more exciting,  Morris shared that students and coaches design custom uniforms.

“What started as one small idea has turned into a program that gives every student from Kindergarten to 5th grade a chance to be part of something special,” Morris continues. “Seeing our students walk into the gym or onto the field wearing their uniforms with pride, cheering for each other, and learning the values of teamwork, respect, and responsibility, that’s what it’s all about."
