Berkmar Middle School’s recent Literacy Night was an incredible success, packed with energy, creativity, and community spirit. Berkmar Middle families explored exciting, hands-on, Halloween-themed activities designed to bring literacy to life at home.

“Our dedicated literacy teachers went above and beyond to support our Multilingual Learners (ML) [for this event], and the turnout was nothing short of amazing!” says Berkmar Middle School Assistant Principal Lineica Maupins.

Some of the activities included Monster Mind Movies, Spooky Summaries, and Creepy Context Clues, all designed to teach fun visualization strategies, strengthen comprehension skills, and help students decode vocabulary in an engaging way— bringing both spooky excitement and meaningful skill-building to the evening.

The school also added a Trunk-or-Treat experience for families. Many came dressed in costume to visit the decorated trunks and participate in fun literacy activities. Maupins adds that support from the Gwinnett County Public Library system and the Boy Scouts of America added an extra layer of excitement and resources for Berkmar Middle families.

“The joy and learning were evident everywhere you looked,” Maupins says.
