Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS), like many districts across the nation, is beginning to experience a notable decrease in chronic absenteeism. This encouraging shift marks progress in addressing a long-standing challenge that has hindered student achievement and overall school improvement efforts.

Improving chronic absenteeism brings a wide range of benefits that positively impact students, schools, and the broader community. When students attend school consistently, they are more likely to succeed academically, as regular attendance is closely linked to higher achievement and on-time graduation.

What’s Driving the Improvement?

Several factors have contributed to this positive trend in GCPS:

  • District-Wide Attendance Campaign: This year, the district launched a district-wide attendance campaign (Everyday Counts in GCPS!) aimed at raising awareness among all stakeholders about the importance and impact of regular school attendance. This cross-divisional effort included the distribution of articles, newsletters, social media posts, staff trainings, and engagement opportunities with families and community members.

  • Targeted Interventions: In addition to broad outreach, GCPS implemented targeted interventions to support students facing attendance challenges. These included an enhanced advisement period for high school students, school-based attendance initiatives, the integration of school-wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), and increased access to school counselors and social workers.

  • Data-Driven Decision Making: The district also strengthened its data-driven decision making by enhancing student information systems to provide real-time attendance tracking for staff, administrators, and parents—enabling quicker, more effective responses to attendance concerns.

  • Family Engagement: GCPS prioritized family engagement by improving communication and outreach to help address common barriers such as transportation, health issues, and mental health needs.

Together, these efforts reflect the district’s commitment to fostering a culture of consistent attendance and student success.

Challenges Remain

Despite recent improvements, several challenges continue to hinder efforts to reduce chronic absenteeism. Many students still face significant barriers outside of school, such as unstable housing, transportation issues, mental health concerns, and caregiving responsibilities, all of which can interfere with consistent attendance. These persistent challenges highlight the need for ongoing, multi-tiered strategies that combine academic, social-emotional, and community-based supports.

Looking Ahead

While the recent decline in chronic absenteeism is an encouraging development, as a district, we will continue to stress the importance of maintaining momentum through continued focus and investment. Sustained collaboration among schools, families, and community organizations remains critical to ensuring that every student has the support they need to attend school consistently and engage meaningfully in their learning. Building on this progress, Gwinnett County Public Schools is committed to advancing these efforts into the 2025–26 academic year, reinforcing its dedication to providing all students with the opportunity to thrive and succeed.
