Classroom Connections and Educator Exchanges

Before the start of each new school year, Gwinnett schools welcome students, their families, and staff for meet-the-teacher experiences and other collaborative events. Building strong relationships between families and teachers starts with a simple introduction. “Meet the Teacher” events before the school year begins are more than a formality; they’re a powerful opportunity to set the tone for open communication, mutual trust, and shared goals. Before students arrive, it’s also essential that teachers come together as a community. Whether you're new to a school or a returning staff member, these cluster gatherings help build a sense of shared purpose and support.

At Centerville Elementary School, “Meet the Teacher Day” is a vital first step in setting the tone for a successful school year. It helps build early connections between students, families, and staff, which fosters a sense of belonging and comfort.

“By creating a welcoming environment, students begin to feel confident and excited about learning,” says Principal Bonita Banks. “Teachers also gain valuable insight into their students and families, allowing them to begin building strong partnerships from day one.”

When it comes to welcoming new students and families to the school, Banks says they can expect a warm and inviting experience designed to make them feel at home. They will have the opportunity to meet their child’s teacher, tour the school and classroom, learn about classroom routines, and receive important information to support a smooth transition. Whether it’s learning how to navigate arrival and dismissal procedures or exploring curriculum focus areas, families will leave feeling informed, supported, and excited to begin their journey with Centerville Elementary.

This year, students entering the School of the Arts (SOTA) at Central Gwinnett High School, experienced the school’s 5th annual “SOTABRATION.” This “back-to-SOTA” kickoff meeting and celebration featured an informational meeting, a meeting with fine arts teachers, and carnival games. In addition, all new students were given a welcome yard sign they can proudly display at home!

“SOTABRATION is an opportunity to meet our families and welcome them into the SOTA family. We believe it helps students and families feel like they truly belong at SOTA,” says Assistant Principal Megan Rose. “We aim to help their new school year start as smoothly as possible by giving them lots of opportunities to come to the school, ask questions, get to know everyone, and feel ready for that first day of school!”

In addition to opportunities that help students and families prepare for a successful start to the school year, GCPS clusters hosted events for school staff. Before the start of school, staff members from schools in the Lanier Cluster attended a breakfast bringing educators, principals, support staff, and community partners together.

“All Lanier Cluster staff members are invited to attend the event,” says Sugar Hill Elementary Principal Dr. Nick Boyers. “It's a way to get all three levels together to encourage unity and pride in the Lanier Cluster.”

The event included Lanier Cluster staff members and key partners, including Sugar Hill Mayor Brandon Hembree, PTA and PTO members, and the Lanier Education Foundation. Sugar Hill Church provided breakfast, and all five cluster principals, along with Cluster Superintendent Dr. Clifton Alexander, spoke to express thanks and provide inspiration for the new school year.
