It is never too early for students to start discovering their career interests. Focusing on our K-12 Computer Science for All (CS for All) initiative, students at every level have access to Computer Science (CS) through extracurricular activities, competitions, and courses like FIRST LEGO ® League, VEX Robotics, and other CS clubs.
Recognizing that students need to have foundational computer skills to thrive in their future careers, Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) is committed to prioritizing these abilities from the start of their educational journey. The district provides students with access to high-quality training, materials, and equipment to support these programs.
“It is important for students to have early exposure to future career opportunities and skill development as early as possible,” says GCPS Director of Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science Sallie Holloway. “Research shows that students who are not exposed to computer science and STEM by 3rd grade are far less likely to choose those types of courses or careers later in life. It’s important for students to develop a positive STEM identity so that they believe that they are capable and belong in those spaces.”
At the middle school level, the Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education (CTAE) program, along with the CS for All initiative, plays a crucial role in introducing students to career pathways that align with their interests. Available for grades 6-12, CTAE offers pathways such as Business Education, Computer Science, Marketing, and more. Additionally, some programs offer students the chance to earn their first high school credit.
