A Crews Middle School student has been named one of the top Junior Innovators in the nation. Sirish Subash, an eighth grader at Crews Middle, has been selected as one of the top 300 Junior Innovators in the Thermo Fisher Junior Innovators Challenge (JIC). The JIC recognizes students who show promise in addressing global challenges through science and engineering. Subash’s project, PestiSCAND: An AI-Based Handheld Pesticide Detector, was presented at the 2024 Gwinnett Regional Science Fair. He was chosen from a group of 1,862 middle school students from across the United States.

“GCPS is incredibly proud of Sirish Subash for his advancement to the Thermo Fisher Junior Innovators Challenge Top 300,” says Jessica Holden, GCPS Director of Science, 6-12. “His dedication to scientific inquiry and innovative thinking exemplifies the spirit of our students. This achievement not only highlights his hard work but also the strength of our science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs. We are excited to see his continued success and the impact his research will have on the community and beyond.”

This accomplishment places Subash’s project in the top 1% of all middle school science fair projects in the nation.
