Duncan Creek Elementary School's 4th-grade students and teachers recently brought lessons from the classroom to life by engaging in a meaningful, grade-level community service project.

The school's 4th-graders partnered with The Jared Box Project to bring joy and comfort to children in local hospitals. “Jared Boxes” consist of a shoebox-sized plastic storage box filled with small gifts, toys, games, crayons, coloring books, and fun activities selected for a specific age and gender. These boxes also include a personal note and feature a decorative lid.

“We are incredibly proud of our students for their hard work and compassion,” says Tiffany M. Bates, a 4th-grade teacher at Duncan Creek Elementary. “Through this project, they’ve learned that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference.”

What began as a classroom initiative quickly blossomed into a school-wide and community-supported effort. With the generous support of families, staff, and community members, these students created 158 Jared Boxes—far surpassing their original goal of 100!

The Jared Boxes were delivered to Piedmont Athens Regional and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) Scottish Rite hospitals. Each box was thoughtfully packed to lift the spirits of young patients and let them know they are cared for.
