“Before, I was just a kid who sat at home all day doing nothing, being lazy and felt invisible. Now that I am part of something, it makes me feel great. I always wanted to be on a team, just never had a chance to.”

These words, written by a former student, capture the essence of GCPS’ Gwinnett HEAT. Since its founding in 2008, the Gwinnett HEAT program provides students with physical impairments an inclusive environment to participate as student-athletes. The program was launched following a presentation by the American Association of Adapted Sports Programs. It aims to fill the gap in sports opportunities for students with physical disabilities who do not qualify for the Special Olympics or compete in traditional sports. The Gwinnett HEAT has fostered a unique setting where student-athletes are empowered to compete, grow, and excel.

The HEAT program offers three adapted sports throughout the year: wheelchair handball in the fall, wheelchair basketball in the winter, and wheelchair football in the spring. Each sport features a six-game season that concludes with a state tournament. To promote participation, GCPS Adapted Sports Coordinator Mike Phillips collaborates with high school athletic directors, special education teachers, and 504 Coordinators to identify eligible students.

“Students with a variety of disabilities participate in the program, emphasizing their abilities rather than their limitations,” says Phillips. The program is designed to be inclusive, focusing on teamwork and resilience. According to Phillips, there have been improvements in students’ grades, attendance, and discipline, and many participants have formed lasting friendships. One example is former North Gwinnett High School track para-athlete Samantha Fraser, who competed on All-Around Champion, a reality show, in 2022.

Supported by GCPS and the community, Gwinnett HEAT continues to inspire. Phillips hopes to reach and identify more potential athletes, ensuring that each and every student who wants to compete has the opportunity to join this transformative team.
