Every Day Counts: Helping Your Child Stay Engaged in School

Regular school attendance gives children the best chance to learn, build friendships, and stay connected to their teachers and school community. When students are present and on time, they’re more likely to succeed academically and feel confident in the classroom.

To support families and students, GCPS has updated how attendance messages are shared during the school year. These helpful notices are designed to keep you informed early — and connect you with support if your child starts missing more days than expected.

What to Expect

To support students and reduce chronic absenteeism, families may receive friendly attendance notifications as your child’s absences add up. These messages are not meant to alarm — they’re intended to strengthen communication between home and school so we can partner with you sooner rather than later.

Here’s how the attendance “nudges” work:

  • 3 total absences – Informational message and offer of support.

  • 7 total absences – Encouragement to connect with your child’s school.

  • 12 total absences – A request for timely attention and partnership to support your student.

These messages help you stay up-to-date and make it easier to work with your child’s teachers and school staff if attendance becomes a challenge.

Why it Matters

Missing school — even for reasons that seem small — can add up quickly and make it harder for students to keep up with lessons, class activities, and social connections.

If you ever need support or resources, your child’s school is ready to help — whether the concern is health-related, transportation-related, or something else affecting your student’s attendance.
