Evolv Weapons Detection System Coming to GCPS Middle and High Schools

Evolv Weapon Detection System in schools

The health and safety of GCPS students and staff is our highest priority. With the Board of Education's approval at its July 17, 2025, meeting, Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) will purchase and install Evolv weapons detection systems in all of our middle and high schools. GCPS has implemented a comprehensive approach to ensure a secure learning environment in each of our schools, and the Evolv weapons detection system will be a critical addition to our ongoing safety and security measures.

Evolv uses low-frequency electromagnetic fields and advanced software to detect concealed weapons, such as firearms. Unlike traditional metal detectors, it can distinguish between weapons and everyday items like phones and keys, reducing delays and the need for additional screening. Our experience with Evolv has thus far been a positive one. The system was successfully piloted at GCPS stadiums and gyms during the 2024–25 school year and this summer at our high school summer school sites.

Installation of the Evolv systems will begin in late August.  Best practice dictates that installations occur at the rate of three schools per week, with all middle and high schools expected to be equipped by early second semester.

As we prepare for installation, you may notice some minor changes at your local school such as arrival processes, drop-off signage, or other logistical changes related to the use of weapons detectors. Please know that your school will share more details directly with you ahead of their scheduled installation.
