At Lanier High School, the First Generation Club represents a haven for students venturing into uncharted territory. Founded by Dr. Bobby Gueh in 2016, this club supports students who are the first in their families to graduate high school or attend college. Many of these students come from undocumented backgrounds or have Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals status. The club, led by Joanna Key since 2018 and co-sponsored by Allye Druian, offers more than just guidance—it provides a community that understands students' unique challenges.
With 40 to 50 members each year, the club focuses on college and career planning through university field trips, workshops, and participation in the Georgia First Gen Leadership Summit. These experiences equip students with the tools to overcome obstacles like Imposter Syndrome, fostering a belief in their potential.
The club’s impact is evident in its success stories, such as Fallou Diagne’s selection for the University of Georgia’s Accelerated Business program and Emily Nyeswa’s receipt of the Posse Scholarship to attend The College of Wooster. Despite challenges, including the strong pull to stay close to home, the club’s partnerships and initiatives, including Interpretation Nation, continue to empower students to serve their communities.
As Key reflects, “This club truly makes a difference in students’ lives as they plan for their life after high school.” The Lanier First Generation Club is not just about dreaming—it’s about turning those dreams into reality.
