October was notable for our GCPS Transportation team, marking both the national recognition of School Bus Safety Week (October 21-25) and the celebration of Bus Driver Appreciation Day (October 21). The month also marks the annual School Bus Rodeo event, held at the Suwanee Safety and Training Center.
The Bus Rodeo is a friendly competition between bus drivers in which progressively challenging obstacles are attempted and completed, and scored by licensed commercial driving professionals. Drivers can participate in the competition during morning and afternoon routes, and the event provides an opportunity for them to showcase their talents. The highest-scoring drivers are awarded a trophy, and the chance to represent GCPS at the state-level competition, where they compete for the honor of being named the best school bus driver in Georgia.
While the competition is exciting, the Bus Rodeo also carries a deeper message: the importance of safe driving habits and strict adherence to federal and state driving laws. Beyond the cheering crowds and friendly camaraderie, this event affirms GCPS' dedication to safe pupil transportation.
