Hull Middle School and Jones Middle School students are putting their engineering skills to the test in the Georgia Water Tower Competition. The annual event challenges students to design and build functioning water towers while learning about water infrastructure and sustainability. Winners from the local competition will advance to the state finals in April.

Jones Middle School teacher and Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics Club Sponsor Tricia Sung says the competition is an impactful hands-on learning tool. “Students engage in hands-on learning by collaborating on an engineering design project that fosters creativity and innovation,” Sung shares. “They invent solutions to protect the environment by using recycled materials and everyday objects from their homes.” Sung believes that middle schoolers are the real superheroes when it comes to saving the environment through creativity and collaboration.

At Hull Middle School, students are embracing the challenge of designing functional water towers. David Schoenrock, 8th grade Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics teacher, and co-sponsor of the school’s Green Team, says the competition makes learning fun. “Students enjoy using the engineering design process to build and problem solve. They enjoy the challenge and the thrill of creating a working model,” Schoenrock shares. “Additionally, this competition gives them the opportunity to apply the skills they've learned on a project with real-world applications and possibly win recognition and prize money for their efforts.”

With creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving at the forefront, students from both schools are eager to showcase their designs and compete for a chance to represent their schools at the state level.
