On October 24, students in Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) after-school care programs celebrated the 2nd annual recognition of Lights on Afterschool Awareness Day in partnership with the district’s Office of Community Schools. Community Schools provide families opportunities and access to community connection, extended day educational opportunities for all ages, and support services across all cluster schools. In addition, after-school care programs at 75 GCPS elementary schools serve 2,485 students in grades Pre-K through 5 in collaboration with the B2Anywhere, Camp Success Academy, GASP!, Right at School, and YMCA of Metro Atlanta.
According to the Afterschool Alliance, which advocates for all children, regardless of income or geographic area, to have access to quality afterschool programs, Lights on Afterschool is the only nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and their important role in the lives of children, families, and communities. Launched in October 2000, the event marks its 25th year of celebrating after-school programs that expose students to extracurricular activities, learning support, and mentoring relationships with caring adults.
“After-school care programs provide safe and meaningful outlets for students and contribute to the peace of mind of our families. We are working with our cluster schools to learn how we can support and expand after-school care programs to additional elementary and middle schools,” says Director of Community Schools Soraia Santos-Felgenhauer.
