Jones MS Mentoring Program

As Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) reflects on National Mentoring Month (January), we are proud to highlight Jones Middle School, one of the district’s most successful mentoring programs.

Three years ago, Jones Middle School Principal Lin Thornton championed a vision to support students academically, socially, and emotionally. Two Jones Middle staff members, Counselor Shena Manning and Advisor April Aviles, brought this vision to life. The school’s mentoring program, which started with 24 girls and eight boys, now supports 104 girls and 55 boys from 6th to 8th grade.

Strong Girlz Mentoring Program

“From the beginning, our school-based mentoring program was founded on the belief that every student needs ‘that one trusted adult’ in our school building, someone they can turn to for support, encouragement, and guidance,” Manning shares. “Mrs. Thornton has always been an committed advocate for this idea, creating an environment where students feel seen, heard, and valued. With her leadership, the program has expanded from just 20 teachers and staff members to 69 mentors across the school. Each of these mentors brings a unique perspective and a genuine desire to help our students succeed.”

Thorton says the impact of the program is clear. She explains, “Students report stronger school connections, improved behavior, and greater self-confidence, and mentors find the experience deeply rewarding. Jones Middle School’s mentoring program stands as a testament to the power of community collaboration and the positive impact of dedicated mentors. As we celebrate the success of this program, we look forward to continuing to support our students and inspire other schools in the district to follow our lead.”
