Open House: Meet, Greet, and Connect

     Before the start of each new school year, Gwinnett schools welcome students and families for open house. Open house events offer more than just a glimpse into classrooms: they are the foundation of community-building, where relationships are formed, trust is nurtured, and shared goals begin to take shape. As we explore our monthly theme, "Stronger Together: Building Community," we learn that when students and families feel welcome and supported, schools become not just places to learn, but places to grow together.

     “Open house acts as a critical bridge between home and school, fostering a sense of partnership and shared responsibility that is fundamental to a successful academic year for everyone involved,” says Jordan Middle School Principal Melissa Miller.

 

   Miller adds that Jordan Middle’s open house is a crucial opportunity for teachers to build strong, foundational relationships with families. It's a chance to truly showcase their personality, their teaching philosophy, and the genuine care they have for each student. Creating a positive first impression during this event can significantly boost family support and engagement. Also, students can gain a clearer understanding of academic expectations and what will be learned throughout the year, which can help them prepare and succeed.

     In addition, this year’s open house featured free haircuts, free school supplies, raffles, and a bounce house. Jordan Middle staff understand that for many families, the cost of haircuts and school supplies can be a genuine challenge. By offering these at no cost to families, they’re actively working to remove immediate barriers that can impact a student's readiness to learn. The school credits the support of community and business partners, Pacific Law Group LLC, Best Life Realty, Elegancia by Navaja, and Best Life Mortgage.

     “When students arrive at school feeling confident about their appearance and equipped with all the necessary tools for learning, they are much more likely to engage fully in the classroom,” Miller says. “A fresh haircut can significantly boost self-esteem, and having their own pencils, notebooks, and other supplies ensures they can dive into their studies without any distractions.”

     At Maxwell High School of Technology, families received a warm welcome, meeting instructors and touring the school’s labs. The event gave students a chance to familiarize themselves with the campus, easing any first-day jitters. Parents were also able to see the hands-on learning environment firsthand, including the fully functioning labs where students can "get dirty," and learn their trade from industry professionals.

     At Berkmar Middle School, open house plays a crucial role in helping students and their families feel more confident and connected as they prepare for a successful school year. By offering the chance to meet teachers, locate classrooms, and understand daily routines in advance, the school increases student confidence and fosters a strong sense of belonging.

     Principal Felecia Jones says open house provides invaluable time for families to collaborate with staff, finalize important orientation agreements, arrange transportation, and get answers to any questions they may have. All of these elements contribute to a seamless and truly successful start to the school year for everyone.

     “Our open house event energizes our staff and students, setting a positive tone for the upcoming academic year,” Jones adds. “It's an opportunity for our dedicated staff to begin building strong relationships with students and their families, while also showcasing the welcoming and student-centered environment we've cultivated at Berkmar Middle.”
