Something is slithering at Burnette Elementary School… a long, limbless creature, made of 100 rocks of different shapes and sizes. Meet Roscoe the Rock Snake!

The idea, started by Burnette Elementary Assistant Principal Melissa Deinhart, encourages students to express their artistic creativity on a rock of their choosing.

Each week, students from every grade level are sent home with a bag filled with instructions and paint to design their rock, which they return the following week to add to the snake.

Three Burnette Elementary students, Seth, Harper, and Graham, sat down with the Gwinnett County Public Schools Communications and Media Relations team to show off their rock-painting skills!

“I love that [painting rocks] gives parents an opportunity to do a fun homework project with their child,” Deinhart shares. “We’re always looking for ways to beautify our school and include our parents in projects.”

The rocks have a range of designs. Some are painted with sports logos, bug drawings, funny faces, and more. The activity has united the community in a unique and fun way.
