Two Gwinnett County Public Schools students were selected as delegates for the 2024 Washington Youth Tour, sponsored by Jackson Electric Membership Corporation (EMC). Alvaro Saldarriaga Arcila, a junior at McClure Health Sciences High School, and Jabez Melaku, a junior at Archer High School, were among the four Georgia students chosen for this leadership development experience.

Alvaro, president of the Spanish Honor Society and a former Science Fair Club president, is actively involved in school and community service, tutoring ESL students, coaching soccer, and volunteering as a translator. He also serves on the Youth Advisory Board for Health Powers Organization and is interning at a health clinic. He is considering careers in law or engineering.

Jabez serves as vice president of community service for the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) and vice president of Books for Africa. He is a scholar-athlete, a Model UN representative, and volunteers with the Southern Gwinnett Co-op Ministry. Jabez plans to pursue a career in engineering.

Since 1965, the Washington Youth Tour has provided more than 3,500 Georgia students with a unique leadership experience. For more information, visit jacksonemc.com/wyt
