“I am incredibly proud of the 12 schools honored as GaDOE Literacy Leaders,” says Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) Superintendent Dr. Calvin J. Watts. “This recognition speaks to their dedication and the incredible work they do every day to foster a culture of literacy and empower our students to learn and grow. They are setting a powerful example of excellence and are making literacy a cornerstone of our students’ lives.”
The GaDOE’s Literacy Leader award highlights the critical role of grade-level reading, particularly in 3rd and 6th grades, as well as performance on the American Literature End of Course (EOC) test for high schools, along with grade-level assessments in elementary and middle schools, which serves as a key measure of literacy by evaluating students’ reading comprehension and proficiency. Schools with lower initial reading achievement levels demonstrated exceptional growth to qualify for this recognition. Awards were presented across all levels, based on reading performance measured by the Georgia Milestones Reading Status indicator, which assesses students’ comprehension using Lexile scores to gauge their ability to read and understand grade-level text.
“We deeply appreciate our teachers and leaders who tirelessly support our students' literacy development,” says GCPS Chief Learning Officer DeNelle West. “Their focus on improving literacy outcomes ensures our students have greater access and opportunities to support their college and career choices. The commitment to structured literacy and strengthening foundational teaching practices is truly commendable.”
The GCPS schools are among a select group of 324 from around the state recognized as 2023-2024 Literacy Leaders. For more information about the criteria, visit the GaDOE website.
