Georgia AIM

Gavin Ownbey of Collins Hill High School has won first place for the Georgia Institute of Technology’s (Georgia Tech) “Manufacture Your Music” competition. The competition was hosted by the team behind Georgia Tech’s EarSketch educational platform. EarSketch is a platform that utilizes coding language technology to assist users in beat-making creation.

“While creating this project, I learned how to write a program in the context of manufacturing music,” Ownbey shares. “This song is a reflection of my experiences and the outlook of my life. Expressing this has helped me understand how to make the most out of my life.”

Winners were selected from a pool of more than 100 applicants from the state of Georgia who created remixes using the EarSketch platform. The prizes for the three finalists and three honorable mentions were Amazon gift cards. As the first-place winner, Ownbey was awarded a $500 Amazon gift card for his achievement. The winners were also able to visit the Guthman Music, Art, and Technology Fair at Georgia Tech with their families.

Ownbey says he wanted to tell a story with his entry. “I wanted to express how stress builds over time with this song. At first, the song has a floaty and mysterious feel, but towards the middle of the song, the bass is used to build suspense.”
