The Duluth High School Navy Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (NJROTC) unit, with 104 participating students, was honored with the Most Improved Unit in Region Award. Presented annually by the Navy JROTC and Area Nine Headquarters, the award recognizes NJROTC units that demonstrate significant academic improvement as a unit, compared to others in the region.

NJROTC Instructor, Master Chief Robert Jackson, credits Duluth High’s positive learning environment with the unit’s success.

“We have motivated leaders who believe in Honor, Courage, and Commitment, and a very supportive administrative staff and principal,” says Jackson.

This marks the Duluth High unit’s first time being recognized for this award, and some of its accomplishments are as follows:

  • A total of 55 cadets achieved Honor Roll in the first semester
  • A total of 10 cadets earned National Honor Society consideration or had a GPA exceeding 3.5
  • 100% of seniors are graduating, 64% of whom are attending either a 2-year or 4-year college
  • Drill team qualified for Area 9 championships, finishing second place overall in the Area (first place overall in drill), and earned the Commander’s Cup
  • Hosted a Drone Competition for the first time in school history
  • Two Drone teams qualified for Area 9 championships
  • Achieved a total of 2,652 community service hours
  • Engaged in major community service events such as “Toys for Tots”, “Relay For Life”, and the annual “Duluth Fall Festival”

The mission of JROTC is to instill the values of citizenship, service, responsibility, and accomplishment. As a reflection of those values, the DHS unit also won the Unit Achievement Award for 2025.
