Duncan Creek Elementary School has been selected as one of five recipients of the Georgia United Credit Union 2026 School Crashers® Grant for a sensory room makeover.

The school was selected after the Duncan Creek Elementary PTA Board submitted a nomination that included a 250-word story and a photo explaining areas that could benefit from improvement. Representatives from the Georgia United School Crashers® program recently visited the school to surprise students and staff with the news.

Duncan Creek Elementary Principal Sheri Tolar shares, “On behalf of the students, staff, and families of Duncan Creek Elementary, we are incredibly grateful to Georgia United Credit Union and the School Crashers® program for awarding us this generous grant. The remodeling of our sensory room will have a lasting impact on our students, providing a calming, supportive environment that meets their diverse needs. Partnerships like this demonstrate the power of community in Gwinnett County, and we are truly thankful for your investment in our children and their success.”

Representatives from Georgia United Credit Union are scheduled to meet with school representatives to begin planning. The transformation will take place during summer break, with the new sensory room scheduled to be ready for students and faculty at the start of the 2026-27 school year.

“The addition of an updated sensory room will be a truly transformative enhancement for our school community. This space represents our ongoing commitment to meeting the diverse needs of every student and ensuring that all learners have access to an environment where they can feel safe, supported, and ready to succeed,” Tolar adds. “The sensory room will provide students with a dedicated area to regulate emotions, reduce stress, and refocus, which ultimately leads to increased engagement and improved academic outcomes. We anticipate that this addition will have a meaningful impact not only on individual students but also on overall school climate, as it helps create a more inclusive and responsive learning environment.”

Funding for the School Crashers® program is provided by the Georgia United Credit Union, its 501 (c) (3) charitable Foundation, and generous donations from community partners, with labor provided by volunteers.
